Bike-a-thon

Description

A one-day bike riding event that combines two goals: a way to complete the cycling honor and to raise funds for the local club.

Location

County or  local clubs are to hold their own bike-a-thon.  If you are interested in a county event, contact your local coordinator.  Otherwise, holding a club bike-a-thon is up to your leaders to decide when and where.

Sponsors

The Bike-a-thon provides an opportunity for Pathfinders to show what they do and ask for donations.  Sponsors are to be acquired before the Bike-a-thon.  Encourage sponsors to donate a flat amount or per mile, starting at 10 cents per mile. The sponsor may wish to stipulate that they will pay 50 cents a mile for 50 miles or a flat donation of $25.

Funds

The key to raising funds for the club is having lots of sponsors, riding safely, and finishing the goal you have set, be it 50 miles or above.

Safety Checks

Bikes are to be in safe riding condition before starting to ride.  Riders swerving may be penalized.  Remember, the helmet law is now in effect and will be enforced;  Adults too.

Clothing

Biking shorts - mid-thigh or jeans, County or Teen shirt and also a helmet are required.  Sturdy shoes - no sandals or flip-lops allowed.  A lightweight jacket during the cool morning is suggested.

Inspection

Directors or an assigned adult needs to check each bike before the event.  All equipment is to be securely fastened.  Wheels are to have all spokes and tires need to be in good repair, no splits or cracks.  Hand/foot brakes and gearshift levers need to be properly working with the chain properly adjusted and lubricated; pedals should rotate freely.  Make sure the handle bar and seat are securely fastened and properly adjusted for the rider.

Training & Riding

Time is not a factor in the Pathfinder Bike-a-Thon as it is not a race.  Your training should prepare you to stay in the saddle and ride comfortable without injury.

  • 8-6 weeks before: ride 10-25 miles a week
  • 6-4 weeks before: ride 20-45 miles a week
  • 4-2 weeks before: ride 10 miles a day
  • 2-1 weeks before: ride 15 miles a day

Take it easy the last 2-3 days before the event; ride just enough to stay limber.  If at any time during training you feel dizzy, weak, or fatigued, slow your training down.  Happy Pedaling!
